Hourlap Privacy Policy

Last updated:

Hourlap is made by A.I. Software (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what the Hourlap app reads, what it keeps, and what, if anything, leaves your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch.

In short: Hourlap keeps your steps, your Health data, your History and the apps you lock on your devices, and its iCloud sync never carries them. If you use iCloud sync, only your settings, your days off, whether a day is strict, a running 15-minute unlock, and for each hour whether it was walked and whether your apps are locked go to your own private iCloud, which we can’t read. We never sell your data, and we don’t use it for advertising.

What Hourlap Reads

  • Step counts. If you allow it, Hourlap reads step counts from your iPhone’s motion sensor (Motion & Fitness) and from Apple Health, which includes your Apple Watch steps. It reads today’s total, how many steps fell in each hour, and past days’ steps for History. Hourlap reads step counts only. It never writes to Health and reads no other Health data.
  • Step counts on your Apple Watch. If you use the Hourlap Apple Watch app and allow it, it reads step counts from Health on the Watch (today’s total and each hour’s steps), shows this hour’s lap, and sends each hour’s step count to Hourlap on your paired iPhone over Apple’s WatchConnectivity, directly between your own devices. The iPhone counts them toward the hour, so a walk with the phone left on a desk still counts. They never go to iCloud or to us.
  • Screen Time. If you allow it, Hourlap uses Apple’s Screen Time framework to lock the apps, websites and categories you choose. iOS gives Hourlap opaque tokens for your choices. Hourlap never learns which apps or websites they are, and it can’t see how you use them or what you browse.

What Hourlap Keeps on Your Device

The following is stored on your iPhone or iPad, in the app’s own storage:

  • your settings: your daily goal, your day end, the apps and websites you chose to lock, your look and your notification choices;
  • a record for each day, kept for up to 800 days: the day’s steps and goal, which hours were walked, when the goal was reached, and how many times apps locked or were unlocked for 15 minutes;
  • today’s latest step counts, for the whole day and hour by hour;
  • on the iPhone, the hourly step counts your Apple Watch sent, from today and yesterday;
  • on the Apple Watch, today’s hourly step counts and what the iPhone last sent it to show (your goal, day end, days off and whether apps are locked);
  • a short log of the latest step checks (the last 200);
  • small state files: your days off, a running 15-minute unlock, whether today is strict, and whether Pro is active.

Deleting Hourlap deletes all of it from that device. If your device’s own iCloud Backup is on, iOS backs up this storage with the rest of your apps’ data, as it does for any app; that is Apple’s backup of your device, encrypted under your Apple Account, and we can’t read it. You can withdraw access at any time in iOS Settings: Health, Motion & Fitness, Screen Time and notifications each have their own switch.

iCloud Sync

So that the same rules apply on your iPhone and your iPad, Hourlap can sync through your own iCloud. It is on unless you turn it off in Hourlap’s Settings (iCloud sync), separately on each device. When it is on, Hourlap keeps a copy of the following in your private iCloud (Apple’s CloudKit private database and iCloud key-value storage), where your other devices signed in to the same Apple Account read it:

  • your settings: your daily goal, your day end, your look and your notification choices;
  • your days off, whether a day is strict, and a running 15-minute unlock;
  • for each hour of the day that has ended, only whether it met its steps or fell short (or wasn’t read); for the hour under way, only that it has met its steps, once it has; whether your apps are locked on that device; and when that device last changed these. So a device that couldn’t read an hour itself can lock and unlock by the same hours. No step count goes with it. Each device keeps one such record for today and one for yesterday, and deletes its older ones the next time it syncs; a device that no longer syncs (sync turned off, Hourlap deleted) leaves its last ones in your iCloud until you delete Hourlap’s data there (below).

Hourlap’s iCloud sync never carries step counts, Health data or your History: each device keeps its own History from its own step readings.

This data is stored by Apple in your iCloud account under Apple’s privacy policy. It is private to your Apple Account: we can’t read it, and it never reaches us or our service providers. The apps, websites and categories you chose to lock are never synced: each device picks its own. Turning iCloud sync off stops it at once and keeps everything on the device. iOS Settings lists the apps that keep data in your iCloud storage, where you can delete Hourlap’s.

What Hourlap Never Syncs or Sends

  • your step counts and any other Health data (iCloud sync never carries them);
  • the apps, websites and categories you chose to lock, and anything about how you use them;
  • your daily records and History.

Hourlap keeps these in its own storage on each device (the Apple Watch’s step counts also go to your paired iPhone, above), and none of it ever reaches us. Health data is never used for advertising or marketing, never sold, and never shared with anyone, including the service providers below.

Service Providers

Hourlap uses the following service providers. Some versions of Hourlap don’t include them yet; a version without them sends nothing.

  • RevenueCat manages Hourlap Pro subscriptions. It receives your purchase and subscription status from the App Store, an anonymous app user ID created by Hourlap, and basic device information (device model, iOS version, app version, country). It does not receive your name, email address or payment details. RevenueCat Privacy Policy
  • PostHog gives us product analytics: which screens are opened and which features are used, so we can improve the app. It receives app usage events (for example, finishing onboarding or opening the paywall), an anonymous identifier created by Hourlap, and basic device information (device model, iOS version, app version, language, country). It never receives Health data, step counts or the apps you lock. PostHog Privacy Policy

This data is not linked to your name or email address, and it is not used to track you across apps and websites owned by other companies. It may be processed outside your country, including in the United States, under appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses.

Sharing a Picture

When you tap Share on a day, a week or Goal reached, Hourlap draws a picture on your iPhone (the date, your laps, your steps and goal, and your streak; never your name, location or the apps you lock) and hands it to the iOS share sheet. It goes only where you send it. Saving it to Photos asks for permission to add to your photo library. Hourlap never reads your photos.

This Website

hourlap.app has no analytics, no cookies, no advertising and no third-party scripts. It is served by Cloudflare, which processes each request (including your IP address and browser details) to deliver the page and protect the site from abuse, under Cloudflare’s privacy policy. We don’t use these logs to identify you. Links to the App Store carry a campaign label so Apple can tell us, in total, how many people came from this site; that tells us nothing about you.

Purchases

Hourlap Pro subscriptions are sold and billed by Apple through the App Store. We never receive your payment details.

Your Rights

Depending on where you live (for example, in the European Union or the United Kingdom), you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal data about you, to object to or restrict its processing, and to complain to your data protection authority. Most of Hourlap’s data never reaches us. For anything held by our service providers, write to us at the address below and we will handle your request.

Children

Hourlap is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
